Class Description

This 3 day workshop will introduce you to the beauty of painting on silk with dyes.  We will experiment with different techniques, practice Karen Sistek’s method for using Magic Sizing instead of resists, learn how to dilute the dyes with commercial diluent or with Vodka (yes, Vodka), do color blending and layering, create textures and just have FUN!

Methods for stabilizing and stretching silk

An introduction to different silk fabrics and dyes

How to transfer a pattern to silk and use resists

Color mixing, ways to dilute dyes and how to create textures in your painting.

Information about steam setting dyes and how to dip set dyes

The class will begin with a practice project in which you will become familiar with using Karen Sistek’s magic sizing method to replace the use of resists.  This method will free you to paint your design without the use of resists.

Supplies Provided ($25)

The 25$ supply fee will include the use of all PVC pipe, dyes, diluents, silk for practice and silk project, a palette for dyes, tape, Magic Sizing, General’s drawing pencil and use of patterns.

Additional supplies you will need to bring for class are:

  • disposable gloves

  • paper towels

  • watercolor brushes – 2 rounds size 8 – 10,  2 flats  These don’t have to be expensive but need to form a sharp point so you can make fine lines.

  • Q tips

  • Silk pins – available from JoAnns or Hobby Lobby

  • An apron

  • A senses of humor

This will be a fun, colorful, spontaneous and useful class.  Come prepared to ENJOY!
