An artful and culturally-rich event!

A nation rich in diversity, Indonesia is a reflection of the pluralism that marks the Asia-Pacific region. Over the centuries, various civilizations, races, faiths and cultures have found a home in the archipelago. Today, it is a nation of a quarter of a billion people, dispersed among no less than 17,508 islands.

The arts and culture of Indonesia will come together this fall at the Artists Showplace Gallery in Dallas. The works of 39 artists from the artists' community of Koperjati in East Java will be on exhibit for a limited time, exclusively at the gallery. East Java is a center of multiculturalism, and as a result, cultures such as Surabayan, Chinese, Pandalungan, Pesisiran, Arabic, and Mataraman have influenced the artistic processes of those who joined this community. The artists believe that in this global era, local cultures must be preserved in the international arena and that art plays a critical role in defining cultural identity.

TEXAS TWOSOME: Outdoor Painters Society Artists Ted Clemens and Randy Saffle

Artists' Showplace Gallery welcomes the Outdoor Painters Society's Ted Clemens and Randy Saffle from April 30 through May 26. A reception to meet the artists will be held on Saturday, April 30, from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. The reception will feature live artist demonstrations as well as stunning jewelry by returning Santa Fe jewelry artist Mitzi, who will also be at the gallery on Friday, April 29.

Native Texan Randy Saffle is an award-winning oil painter whose rural upbringing is a major influence on his work. He views his paintings as those of a storyteller: "These places, these objects, each contain their own stories and invite the viewer to step into them, digging up their own memories."

Although not a native Texan, Ted Clemens is most inspired by the people and landscapes of his adopted state. His spirituality is evident in his philosophy about art: "Doesn't matter how well you draw or paint. Creating isn't just pretty pictures. It's heart and soul."

"Calligraphy is very much alive as an art form, creating beauty and feeling through the creative arrangement of curves, spaces, colour and rhythm of lines."--Marianne Elliott

Come see for yourself as Kaligrafos, the Dallas Calligraphy Society, exhibits the beautiful work of local calligraphy artists from April 4 through April 29 at Artists' Showplace Gallery. Wood Turner Kevin Bassett

Kevin Bassett's interest in the art of wood turning evolved from his intensive study of plant pathology in his home state of Colorado, followed by a distinguished 40-plus-year career as a certified arborist.

Wood turning differs from other forms of woodworking in that the wood is moving while a stationary tool -- a lathe -- is used to cut and shape the wood to create intricate designs. Working with the lathe allows Bassett to explore and expose the incredible beauty of the inner part of the tree.

He describes his work as a collaboration with nature. "Even though I choose the shape, form and utility of a piece of a tree, ultimately the tree has its own voice. I am only a conduit through which the tree is able to speak."

Bassett's artwork ranges from decorative vases to functional items to intricately-laced sculptures. Each piece is one of a kind.

Texas Artist George H. Jones

Texas Artist George H. Jones

Vivid and captivating, George H. Jones' large-scale paintings are matched only by his Texas-sized personality.

The Lakewood native began his art career at a very young age and sold his first painting at the age of ten. A University of Texas graduate, he studied advertising in college and worked in a variety of fields until he dropped everything -- despite his parents' wishes that he pursue a "practical" career -- to become a full-time artist.

Jones has been painting for 40 years and was recently featured on Good Morning Texas, where he painted live in the studio.

His paintings represent his Texas heritage and his love of animals. Painting primarily in oils, Jones often uses a palette knife to create a "chunky", 3-D texture that reaches out from the canvas.

"Bold", "vibrant" and "whimsical" are just a few words that describe Jones’ wet-on-wet abstract works. You see it in layer upon layer of generous paint applied in colors and hues that create mystery and leave much to the imagination of the viewer.

Jones' work proudly hangs in the private collections of former Vice President Dan Quayle (as well several of his advisors), professional athletes, and in over 20 galleries across North America, including ART on 5th in Austin, Grand Teton Gallery in Jackson Hole, and Masters Gallery in Vail.
